The Greatest Football Game Ever PlayedThe Greatest Football game ever played is Super Bowl 51.   Of course like anything in sports it is debatable.  But there is no doubt in my mind and many others that this game is at least in the running.  In my opinion it is the greatest Super Bowl ever played.  It could also be the best football game ever played.

The beginning of the game was so unexpected with the Falcons jumping out to a huge lead.  With an offense like the Falcons you would think that a two touchdown lead, not to mention a 25 point lead would be enough for them to win the game.  The Patriots looked so off and the Falcons looked so on.  At half time there were probably very few people that thought the outcome of this game was in doubt.  It was going to be the Falcons in a blow out.  Come on now.  You were thinking it.

That brings up the question.  What this the greatest comeback ever or the biggest choke ever.  The answer is both.  In order for their to be a comeback their has to be the choke.

If Atlanta does not make the mistakes they made in the second half then this is a completely different conversation.  Even with those mistakes the Patriots still had to take advantage of those mistakes.     If the Patriots do not score off of the fumble recovery then this game does not end the way it did.

The Greatest Football Game Ever Played

In order to make this the greatest football game ever played a lot had to happen after the first half.   Really the first half could just be left out of the replay.   Well I guess it could be in for the set up.  The way the game turned out.  That is all it is.  If this Super Bowl was a movie this is how the script would have been set up.  People would have said “that is so unbelievable”  and you know what they would have been correct.

The biggest comeback in a super bowl ever was 10 points.  A touchdown and a field goal lead.  That is it.  10 little points.  That lead happened in the first quarter so not crazy that a team could make that up.  In this game there was a 25 point lead for Atlanta in the second half.  Another really crazy thing that happened in this game to set this all up is. Stephen Gostkowski – one of the most accurate place kickers in NFL history had to miss an extra point.  He did, he bounced it off the upright to set up a scenario where the Patriots would have to go for the two point conversion twice  in order to tie the game up.  I mean really come on.  What are the chances of that?

Roger Goodell – Jokes on you

Yes it happened.  It all played out.   It was almost like the script had been written just to get back at Roger Goodell  for what he did to the Patriots and Tom Brady for deflate gate.  Of course then that script was done at the expense of the Falcons.  Unless you are a Patriots fan, and maybe if you are, you do have to feel a little bad for the Falcons.  They were so close.   Any one of the crazy plays does not happen in the second half and they are super bowl champions.

Was this the greatest football game ever played?   Some will say no.  I say yes.  The only thing that would make it better would be if it had been my team that made this amazing comeback to win the Super Bowl.
