College football playoff rankings for week four.  Now is the time where things really start to matter.  Not really in the long run it is only the last poll that matters.  I would hope that the committee gives us something interesting to talk about this week.  This could be difficult for them to do since the only teams in the top ten that lost were 6th ranked Oregon and 8th ranked Penn State.  At least Penn State lost to the second seeded Ohio State.  Penn State played them pretty close.  Closer than what the spread was but there really was not much doubt that Ohio State was the better team.

The Oregon loss was one that made you go a bit cross eyed.   Arizona State went way ahead early and the Ducks waited till the 4th quarter to start playing.  They almost came all the way back but ended up losing by three points.  That loss by Oregon could cost the PAC 12 a spot in the playoff.  Oregon has no chance so that would leave only Utah with a chance to end up grabbing one of the four spots in the playoff.

Here is the College Football Playoff Committee Rankings for week Four

1. Ohio State (11-0)
2. LSU (11-0)
3. Clemson (11-0)
4. Georgia (10-1)
5. Alabama (10-1)
6. Utah (10-1)
7. Oklahoma (10-1)
8. Minnesota (10-1)
9. Baylor (10-1)
10. Penn State (9-2)

The Committee moved Ohio State to number one.  That is not a surprise.  LSU and Ohio State are pretty equal and have similar big wins.  Yet once again you have a crazy ESPN analyst spouting off about how outrageous this is.  Mike Greenberg who is trying his hardest to re brand himself as Stephen A. Smith 2.0 said this

“If beats Georgia in the SEC championship they will be the first team in almost 80 years to beat five Top Ten teams in a season. That they aren’t number one in the country is positively outrageous.” – Mike Geenberg on Twitter @EspnGreeny

Sure Mike this is an outrage.  Other than the fact that Ohio State also has a pretty good resume and has the number one defense in college football. The teams are extremely close.  Close enough that it really does not matter which one is first and which one is second.  If both teams win out the goal for the committee is to set it up so that Ohio State and LSU play each other for the championship.  There is still two more polls to go.  If LSU or Ohio State are placed at 5th after the final poll then that would be the time for outrage.

As it sits now the top three are going to be the top three in the end.  The question is who is going to be in the fourth spot.  If Georgia beats LSU in the SEC championship game it could be LSU at the fourth spot.  If LSU and Ohio State both lose then Clemson could move to the top spot.  As long as Ohio State and LSU win this week and don’t get blown out in their championship game then they are going to be in.  Clemson is going to be in because I just don’t see them losing either of their last two games.

If Georgia loses in the SEC championship game then they will be out.  The team that jumps up to four will be either Alabama, Utah or Oklahoma.  There is a lot more that could happen here.  With two more polls to go it is fun to watch.  The rivalry games this weekend help to shape how things are going to go.
