That is hard to say.  After listening to the radio on the way in to work today it seems that to sports broadcasters that any team that pays big money for a player that is not a “Major Market” team is paying too much and has made a mistake.  I know they make more money by having the big market teams be good and have all the huge talent out there or at least the big names.   But does it make any sense?

Is is better to have a few teams that are able to win a championship or to have a bunch of teams that could make a run.  Since all the major sports either have a large number of teams in the playoffs or are looking to add more it seems then like it is a numbers game.  More teams in it = more money.

This came to mind because of the Prince Fielder signing by the Detroit Tigers.  $214 Million.  That is a lot of cash.  But in the big picture for the Tigers is it really that huge a number.  Sports teams are in it for one reason.  It is not the reason that the talking heads want you to believe.  It is not to win championships like they think.  Winning a championship is a nice bonus but the reason the team owners are there and the players are there is to make money.  That is it.  To make money.  Winning is fun but that is not the main goal.  So the signing of Prince Fielder by the Tigers is much bigger than just being able to make a run at a World Series.  He will be a big Money draw for the Tigers.  The history is there.  The fans will make a connection with him and the team will win.  They are a good team.  They will win a lot of games and that will help bring in more fans and more money.  Will they win a World Series.  Who knows.  If they do then it will be a great bonus.  Will they be exciting to watch.  YES
