LakersLakers Finally Trade for Davis.  It took a few months longer than people though it would but the trade has finally been made.   It seems like the Lakers gave up a lot to get Anthony Davis from the Pelicans.  It may turn out that they did.  After you take a little deeper look at the trade.  The deal the Lakers made starts to look much better.  The Lakers gave up three players that really did not make much difference on their team.  The Draft picks that they gave up could potentially be worth a lot more than the players they gave up.  The Lakers completing this deal now is a good thing.  It would have been a better thing if they had been able to complete this trade at the trade deadline.  But as we know that was just not meant to be.

The Lakers Become a West Contender

Last year when the Lakers picked up LeBron James people thought that was enough.  What a win for the Lakers.  It was a win.  It turns out however that the cast of players behind him were far worse than the team he he had in Cleveland.  With James in the line up the Lakers were the 4th seed in the West for a while.  When James got hurt in their Christmas win over the Warriors that was the end for them.

Getting rid Of the Ball is a win

Included in the trade was the departure of Lonzo Ball.  With that departure you lose his distracting and confusing father.  Lonzo Ball was taken with the second overall pick in the 2017 draft. It was an ok pick.  probably could have done better by picking De’Aaron Fox.  He has averaged more points per game and played more games in his two years than Lonzo but who knows what would have happened if the picks has went in a different order.  Lonzo is alright as a player he will have a nice career where ever he plays.   More than likely he is not going to be a Hall of Fame player in the NBA.

Attractive to Other Players Again

With the Lakers putting themselves in a position to win again.  Getting Davis could make them more attractive to other players.  The problem with this is that Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka forgot that in order to sign another or other players to fill out the roster you need money.  That will limit what the Lakers will be able to do then.  That is not to say they could not work something out to try and get to that point.  They would then be losing any roll players that they would need on this team.  We all know that in the NBA you need the stars to win.  We also know that the stars need to roll players to be at lest adequate for a team to have a deep run in the playoffs.

Out Look for the Future

The Outlook for the Lakers is much better than it was last year.  Before LeBron James go hurt the Lakers were in  the playoff mix.  They more than likely did not have a shot at a deep run in the playoffs.  With Anthony Davis they will be a better team.  With just James and Davis they will more than likely make the playoffs.  Regardless of who the roll players are.

The question is can they put together a team that can do more than just make the playoffs  Can they compete for a championship?   If they can this is the year to do it.  Everything in the West is going to be wide open.  There is no reason that the Lakers should not go all in on this season and see what they can do.
