Championship SundayChampionship Sunday is one of the most exciting football days of the year.  The weekends with the Wildcard and the divisional games are usually just a little more exciting since there are four games.  Championship Sunday is the second to last games of the year.  There is the Pro Bowl next week.  I am really not sure why so many people watch.  It really is not football but more of and event.  Fine.  Not football.  It fills the Sunday between Championship Sunday and the Super Bowl.  The games this past Championship Sunday had a pretty good one and a dud.  Guess that will  happen from time to time.  Even with the dud it was still some exciting football.  It still decided who makes it to the Super Bowl.  The NFL really does their playoffs right.  Every game means something. There is something very exciting about win or you are done.  The match up is set for the big game now.  Will be an exciting end to the season.

Championship Sunday In the AFC

The Chiefs 35 Titans 24. Not sure how many people were really giving the Titans much of a chance in this game.  Even though the Titans has taken out two monster teams in the Patriots and the Ravens.  The Titans came out strong and smacked the Chiefs in the face.  It seems to be a thing with the Chiefs.  Get down early and then show everyone what they can do.  In the game against the Texans the Chiefs spotted them 24 points before they decided to play the game.  They only spotted the Titans 10 points before they decided it was time to turn it on.

The Texans expended to much energy getting to an early lead that it eventually is what lead to their demise.  It happens so many times at all levels of sports. The underdog team gets so hyped up and plays so hard that the other teams is just not able to stick with them.  The problem with this is that just due to how intense it is.  That rush can only last a short time.  There will be and was a major drop off.  The Texans slowed down and the Chiefs kept at their same pace.  All things being even then the Chiefs were the better team.

This is the first time that the Chiefs will be playing in the Super Bowl in fifty years.  That is pretty amazing when you look back over those fifty years.  The Chiefs have had some pretty good teams.  It just shows how difficult it is to get there.   I head the question asked if it is urgent that the Chiefs win this Super Bowl.  They have a young teams and surely they will be back.  Can’t think like that.  Just ask Dan Marino he got to the Super Bowl his second year in the NFL.   Never made it again even though he had an amazing year.  What it comes down to is that you just don’t know what is gong to happen from here on out.  You may never get back again.  So yes this is urgent for the Chiefs to win.  Another example is their coach.  Andy Reid took the Eagles to the Super Bowl in 2004.  It took him 16 years to make it back.  He may not make it again.

Championship Sunday In the NFC

The 49ers 37 Packers 20.  I am not sure that this game was even that close.  The 49ers could pretty much do what ever they wanted against the Packers defense.  They decided they wanted to run and boy did they run.  Jimmy Garoppolo only had to throw 8 passes.  That is just crazy in a dominating win to only have to throw 8 passes.  San Francisco ran the ball 42 times for 285 yards.  The Packers gave up a crazy 6.8 yards a rush attempt to them.  Kyle Shanahan knew what his team could do.  He knew the limitations of the Packers defense and he was able to take advantage of that weakness.

The Packers really did nothing to counter act that.  I am not sure what the ratio was of people picking the 49ers compared to picking the Packers.  I am pretty sure that number was tilted very heavily toward the 49ers.  Not just from the way things went the first time they played.  the 49ers defense especially their defensive line has shown that they will wreak havoc on the other teams offensive line.  The Packers run game did nothing and they were unable or unwilling to switch to a short quick passing game.  This is pretty much what the  Packers have done all season.  Shanahan and the other 49ers coaches knew this and took full advantage of how predictable the Packers were.

The 49ers are a young team.  They are in a similar situation that the Packers were in in 2010 when they won the Super Bowl.  Good offense.  Good defense and a young team.  People are probably thinking that this is just the start of  a long run.  It could be but like the Chiefs you just don’t know what the future will bring.
