How many times are you excited for a sports season to start but by the end of it you just can’t wait for it to be over or just give up on it and think that it has already been over for a while?

In the name of greed many of the Professional sports leagues have extended their seasons to the point of diluting the meaning of the regular season.  Along the lines losing the attention of the avid sports watching fans.  Maybe this is just me but I don’t think that it is.  The NFL made the right choice by not extending their season to 18 games.  Even though in the long run it would not have added to the length of the season since they would have taken two of the meaningless preseason games and moved them to the regular season it still was the right move to make.  The NFL has a good thing why change it.  It is popular just the way it is now and adding two more regular season games could have caused problems.

Other leagues have not had the ability to understand how the length of a season can take away from the product.  NASCAR goes from February to November.  Holy Cow and 8 month season.  That is nuts.  Not to mention that it goes deep into the Football season and other than the hard core fans everyone has abandoned it.  The NASCAR ‘playoffs’ are going on now.  How many of you knew that?  I love watching races but by the time Fall comes around I forget to check the schedule to see when the race is on or watch the beginning of the race if there is not a good NFL match up for the early game.  The television numbers show this just check out the ratings compiled by the great NASCAR site Jayski.  Over the course of the season the ratings go down and are the lowest while “The Chase” is going on to crown a champion.

The MLB season is also way too long.  It is even a month shorter than the NASCAR Schedule but come on 162 games.  That is a crazy amount of games.  Then after that you have the playoffs which Baseball wants to extend.   What is next year around baseball?  Really do you think that is what the fans really want?  Not every year is going to be like this year where there were amazing comebacks for teams appeared to be dead but put on the late push and made it into the playoffs.  Then this years World Series was one that people will be talking about for years as one of the best.   To think that can be duplicated every year is crazy.  It just is not possible to have something like that every year when there are so many games though the season that mean nothing.

The NHL and NBA are in the same boat as far as length of schedule goes.  They both have 82 game seasons and both go almost the same length in terms of number of days or months.  They start in the Fall and go into the Spring almost to Summer if you include the playoffs.  By the time that a Champion is crowned it is hard to stay interested .  The seasons take their toll on the fans and on the players.  Do we really need 82 games in each of these seasons?

In Golf I don’t think that the season ever ends.  The TV watching part of the schedule pretty much goes from February to September.  A long time but not crazy long.  Really the main part of the season for most people starts in April with the Masters and finishes with the Players Championship in August.  Other than that there are no fringe viewers just the hard core golf fans.

Then there are the College sports of Football and Basketball.  College Football plays a regular season of 12 – 13 games.  Then they take a break and have the Bowl season.  That seems to be about the right length.  College Basketball is creaping up on being too long but they make up for it with the most exciting tournament in Sports.

So what do you think?  What gets you going or not going about the length of the different sports seasons?
