ChampionshipsChampionships are the way to determine success in a career.  At least that is what most sports personalities want you to believe.  They pound it in to your ears every chance that they get.  This championship will cement someones legacy.  If they lose this championship it will tarnish their legacy.  Really how did it get to that?  Are we really going to say that because one player won more championships they are better than another.  It seems like yes.

On the flip side of that they are saying that chasing championships is a bad thing.  Such is the case with Kevin Durant.  He left Oklahoma just to chase a championship.  Really?  Did you come to that conclusion all on your own?  I thought that he changed teams so that he could just play with new guys and see what happens.  Yes of course it is to chase a championship.  Why else do you think that the players play.  If he had stayed at Oklahoma it would have also been to chase a championship.  He decided that moving on to Golden State gave him a better chance to win.  What do you know he was correct.

You can’t have it both ways

You can’t have it both ways.  It does not make sense to chide someone for never winning a championship and then chide them for moving on to a team that gives them a better chance to win one.

Yes I do agree with them that the ultimate goal in any sport is to win championships.  There are a lot of players that will never win one.  One of the best to play in the NFL and not win is Dan Marino.    In my opinion he is still one of the best players to ever play QB.  It does not matter that he did not win a Super Bowl.  Would it have made it better if he had, sure.  But it does not make him any less of a player that he did not.

In every  sport there has been a great player who did not win a championship.    There are a few reasons that I see as to why Championships should not be the main criteria for determining the best player in any sport.

Why basing on Championships makes no sense

First in no sport can one player do it all.  The closest is in basketball but even then one player cannot on their own will their team to win.  They need a group of elite players with them.  Even then there is no guarantee that they will win the championship.

Second it is really hard to win a championship.  It is not always based on skill.  There is ability and luck that goes into winning a championship.  In both of the Super Bowls between the Giants and Patriots.  There were key plays that happened to go the Giants way.  Was there some skill involved there?  Maybe but it was not all skill.  It was skill and luck.

Third in each league only one team can win the championship each year.  This is the one that the Championship pushers seem to forget about the most.  One.  Only one team can win the championship each year.

It seems that most of the time with the sports personalities it is a no win situation for the athletes.
