The Week That WasThe Seasons start to get serious.    How can that be?  They just started right!  In College football the seasons start to get serious from game one.  The seasons start to get serious after you lose one game.  I’ll go back to the seasons start to get serious at game one.   In the NFL The seasons start to get serious about 4 games in.  You have an idea of what you have.  The rust is knocked off.  Teams are in the groove.  Unless you are 0 – 4 you have a chance still.   The NHL the seasons start to get serious at the start of the season.  If you come out of the gate slow it is difficult to play catch up the whole season.

NCAA Football

Ohio State vs Penn State turned into a game of I don’t want to win.  Penn state won the battle of I don’t want to win.  Strange way of saying the Buckeyes were the beneficiary of some really crazy play calling. After the Game was over.  James Franklin the Penn State coach admitted that the blame for the loss was on him.  He was correct to say that.

After watching that game it was mind blowing to think of two calls that he made.  Either one of them could have been the play that cost them the game.   The call at the end of the game to call a run on 4th and 5 probably cost them the game more.  Or at least took away the opportunity to win.   Going for it on 4th down from just outside the 20 when a field goal probably seals the game for you was also a questionable call.

Who is still Good

College football has seemed to sunk into some extreme mediocrity.  The B1G is not nearly as good as people were predicting they would be.  The ACC does not look all that strong either.  The PAC 12 was not expected to be very strong and they are holding up their end of the bargain on that one.  The Big 12 looks like they will be a one horse or should I say Sooner race.

The SEC looks like the strongest conference and that is only because of one team.   Ok maybe three or four teams.   Alabama looks like the strongest team in the sport.  No surprise there.  At this point Georgia, LSU and Kentucky of all teams look to be pretty strong.  I expect that Georgia and LSU will  both have some kind of unexpected loss.  Kentucky came so far out of the Blue ( see what I did there) that there is no way of knowing how good they actually are.

NFL – The Quarter Turn

Hard to believe that we are already four games into the NFL season.    A quarter of the way in. That is like being 40 games into the baseball season or 20 games in to the NHL or NBA season.   Since the NFL season is so short it always amazes me how fast it goes by.  It is looking like there is one really good team in the league.  Amazingly it is the Rams.  The Rams were actually supposed to be good this year so it really is not a surprise.   I don’t think that they were expected to start out this strong though.

Did you know that Goff is on a pace to throw 5000 touchdown passes this year?   Of course this is an exaggeration.  He is on pace to break the record set by Peyton Manning a few years ago of 55.  Making these kinds of projections this early in the season is a bit crazy though.  If his amazing run of touchdown passes happened in the middle of the season then it would be looked at differently.   If he is still on this pace at the half way mark.  Then we can revisit this.

Jump to Conclusions

For those of you who had written off the Patriots already. HA HA.  I don’t say that because I am a fan of the Patriots.  I say that because until they actually miss the playoffs I will not write this team off.   The Patriots completely destroyed the previously unbeaten Dolphins.  Not sure the Dolphins are as good as their start.  I know for sure that the Patriots were not as bad as their start.

In the NFC don’t look now but the Bears are in first place in the NFC North.  Again early but who would have expected this.  They are playing pretty well and if not for the Aaron Rodgers miracle in game one.  The Bears would be undefeated.   The one that is even more crazy is that the Vikings are only a half game out of the basement.  Barley ahead of the Lions.  The weekend of November 4th when they play the Lions may be for who can stay out of the basement.

NHL Begins

We will have a preview of the season after the season starts.  LOL   This week the NHL season starts.  Like other sports the preseason does not mean a whole lot about how the season is going to go for any given team.   In the NHL the preseason is set up to decide who is going down to where in the minors.   Young players get a lot of playing time.  it does give you a pretty good idea where teams are headed though.

The teams at the top of the preseason standings all look like they are going to be headed in the right direction.  The Wings , Oilers, Golden Knights, and Leafs are all set to have good seasons.   The surprising team here is the Wings.  They have been building but seem to be quite a bit ahead of where people thought they would.  At worst this year they should be playing for a playoff birth.  After two years missing the playoffs that will make Detroit fans very happy.

It will be much more difficult for the Golden Knights to reach to success of last year.  After their amazing run to the Stanley Cup Finals in their first season.  The only thing that would be an advancement would be to win the cup this time.   Can they do it?  Sure.  The question is can they have the same kind of season.   Difficult to say.  A lot of things had to break their way for that success last year.   Chances of that happening again are pretty slim.   But there is a chance.

NBA – What is gong on

The NBA preseason is just getting underway.  Most teams have only played one game so far.   Not too much to say yet.  The strangest thing so far with the start of the season is Seeing LeBron in a Lakers jersey.  It just seems unnatural and strange.  Unless of course you are a Lakers fan then is seems alright.  I would suppose anyway.  I guess there are some Lakers fans out there that are not that happy.  They need to get over it.  Even with how long LeBron has been in the NBA he is still the best player on the planet.  Anyone that would not want him on their team is nuts.

Golf – The Ryder Cup

I really do not understand all these different golf get together’s that happen after the season.  The Ryder Cup.   Presidents Cup.  They are all the United States against the world.  Why?  I just don’t know.   I care so little that I did not even do the research to find out the history of the tournaments.  They pop up every other year and are hosted at rotating locations.  It seems that some people consider them to be a big deal.  It seems that the International teams consider it to be a bigger deal then the USA does.  What I do know is that the International team smoked the USA team this year.  It was not even close.  Why did this happen and continue to keep happening?   I would say probably because the USA players really don’t care that much about it either.

Seasons Start to get Serious MLB

As the season finally came to an end there were two play in games that needed to be played.  The interesting thing with these is that for the first time in MLB history (which is a really long time)  all four of the teams would get into the playoffs.  The games were to decide who the division winners were going to be and who the wild card teams were going to be.  To me the one game play in and one game wild card games are great.

It is an all or nothing senario for the wild card game and that is fantastic.   If you don’t want to be in the wild card games win more.  There are 162 games in the season.  The team that did not have to play in the wild card game won what they needed to.  There is no crying in baseball when the seasons start to get serious.

Love the Television

Seasons Start to get Serious when the new fall season starts to ramp up.   We talked a bit about this last week.  The winner for new Fall favorite show is New Amsterdam  The commercials for this show had looked promising.  I have seen commercials like that before that hook you in but then that 60 second commercial was the only good part in the show.  In this case that was not so.  It does happen a lot that we will like a show and then the rest of the world does not so I guess we will see how this goes.

The show that has been the most disappointing that we just can’t stop watching is Fear the Walking Dead. Not really sure how they were able to mess this up so bad.    Every season of Fear the Walking Dead has either managed to get worse of just have no story to tie them together.  This season started out pretty well.  It then just fell off the rails hard.  When I say hard I mean the engine crashed straight down off a ravine.   I do not think that this show is going to be able to be saved.  We will be the ones that stick with it till the cold bitter end.
