College Football Playoff the final ranking before the one that counts.  The top four stayed the same as last week.  We know that the top four cannot all win out.  LSU and Georgia will play in the SEC championship game.  Ohio State will play Wisconsin who is sitting at number eight.   Clemson will play Virginia who is sitting all the way down in twenty third.  Baring some kind of craziness the top three teams will stay the same next week.  It is unlikley that any of them will lose their conference championship game.  The best chance for a loss would be Georgia beating LSU.     If that happens that would be where the crazy could start.

College Football Playoff Possibilities

If Georgia beats LSU in a really close game that could be the avenue for the committee to put two SEC teams in.  If LSU wins then I do not see any way that Georgia can get in the playoff.   In the Big Ten if Wisconsin beats Ohio State in the Championship game it is possible that the Big Ten is left out of the playoff.  By putting Oklahoma and Baylor at 6 and 7 a lot of things have to happen for them to move one of those team up into the top four.  Like having Ohio State, LSU and Clemson all lose and Utah lose to Oregon in the PAC 12 championship game.   Not impossible but highly improbable.  Strange things have happened before on the path to the College Football Playoff.

Here is the College Football Playoff Committee Rankings for week Five

1. Ohio State (12-0)
2. LSU (12-0)
3. Clemson (12-0)
4. Georgia (11-1)
5. Utah (11-1)
6. Oklahoma (11-1)
7. Baylor (11-1)
8. Wisconsin (10-2)
9. Florida (10-2)
10. Penn State (10-2)

The interesting thing here is that for the first time since we have had the college football playoff Alabama is not in the top ten.  The committee got that right.  Alabama should not be there.  At least here they are showing that past success is not being taken into account here.  Keeping Ohio State on top of the poll is not a surprise.  LSU at two and Clemson at three are not a surprise either.  It is pretty clear that those three were the easy part.  Each of those teams keeps winning.  They all look like they are the three contenders to win the championship.  I am not sure it really matters who is the fourth team.   That team will have to play either Ohio State or LSU.  Who ever it is will be a huge underdog.

The last team on the list that has any chance to get in is Baylor.  Starting with Wisconsin at 8.  There is almost a zero percent chance that those teams will get in.  That is how it should be.  None of those teams has shown that they deserve to be in and there is little chance that they would be able to win a game in the playoff.
